We pass the time on the beach waiting for the the Anacortes ferry. Left to right: Seana, Tanya, David, Sarah, and Sasha. |
Raf, Sarah, David, and Tanya (mostly hidden behind David) uncover critters under the rocks. The leg is Seana's. |
Raf aims his tongue at a strange green critter on a rock. Will this be a friendly puppy lick or do we need to feed Raf more? |
Sarah shows Raf one of the many small hermit crabs she snatched away from their cozy under-rock homes. |
Raf, Sarah, and Sasha huddle on the Anacortes ferry beach and look at more creepy beach critters. Tanya stands in the background. |
David, Tanya, and Sasha explore the beach on San Juan Island near the University of Washington's satellite campus. |
Looking across the water toward Friday Harbor from the beach in the previous picture. |
Lunch in a grass field next to the UW's satellite campus. We were given a tour of the facilities by a friend of the Sasha's. The facilities support research and teaching in marine biology and oceanography. |
Sasha relaxes in the grass between Tanya and Sarah. |
Raf, Tanya, and David graze on the tall grass around around our lunch stop. Tanya doesn't always look this funny, the grass somehow brings it out of her. |
Raf poses with a big piece of grass. Seana is mostly obscured behind him. |
Later in the day, just before dinner, we explore San Juan Island State Park (on the west side of the island). Alan get's a good view of a tide pool. |
Sarah almost avoids the camera, moving away from the tide pools pictured in the previous photo. David climbs up toward Seana and Sasha overlooking the water. The flat grassy picnic area is up at their level. |
Sarah and Tanya pack up the rain fly for Sarah's tent. The tents were setup on some undeveloped land owned by the Tavenners (we are told the campgrounds on San Juan Island are expensive). Part of the land had tree cover, but this was an open, moderately flat area. |
Sarah and Tanya continue to pack up the tent. The orange tent in the background is the Tavenner's. The tents were setup before we went to the beach pictured in the last two images, and when we returned the orange tent was full of water. The guys (who were going to use this tent) were thankful this fundamental infirmity was discovered sooner. Raf and Seana slept in Seana's van and Alan slept with the girls in Sarah's tent. (David had his own tent.) |
A rose garden lies next to a lake at British Camp, most notable for the almost completely uneventful Pig War. |
