Gluing the Tubes
ll the tubes that check out are taken to another room to be glued together into 3x16 "multilayers". There are two multilayers for a total of 96 tubes in our little chamber. The gluing is done on precisely aligned "combs" which have a vacuum system to keep the tubes in place while the glue dries. Since the setup is made for much larger chambers we can build both multilayers simulatneous, one layer of 16 at a time. For the production of the 80 large chambers that Michigan built we used a robot to lay the glue onto the tubes, but to avoid too much setup time we are mostly putting the glue down by hand.
